I recommend this book to anyone of any religion who would like a greater understanding of these amazing women in the Bible.
The Author shows insight into some of the lives of the great women of the Old Testament. During the reading, I gained greater respect for the strength of these women. They played pivotal roles in the success of their husbands. What crossed my mind was how often great leaders' success depends upon the support of their spouses!
This book is thoughtfully written. I gained a greater insight not only into the lives of the wives of the great Patriarchs of the Bible, but a more in-depth understanding as to the divine roles these women played in bringing about God's covenant with His people. I was going to point out some of my favorite chapters, but love the whole book! Another thing that makes this book awesome is Diana's explanation of the books used in her Bibliography section. For those unfamiliar with these books, it's very, very helpful. It's a great addition to your scripture commentary library.
Our book group chose to read Biblical Lionesses Protectors of the Covenant by Diana Webb about the five women, Sarah, Hannah, Rebecca, Leah, also including Eve, who are the leading matriarchs of the Tribe of Israel. I found this to be a fascinating book! As a Hebrew scholar and linguist with an MA in Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Webb included insightful comments and translations from diverse scholarly and Jewish sources. Our whole book group was very intrigued by these many historical records and various religious interpretations by writers of the Jewish faith (stretching from records written from early BC thru today) and other historical and Biblical scholars of various Christian faiths.
There is much to delve into and think about in this relatively short book. Most of the different women in our book club seemed to choose a favorite matriarch, for very personal reasons. But each of the 5 women had her own band of fans. Webb pointed out how helpful and insightful the lives of Sarah, Hannah, and Rebecca are for women in our day and age who want to become pregnant, but are dealing with the stress of infertility. Each of these Biblical lionesses had her own particular set of challenges that were relevant to discuss and consider in the here and now. I highly recommend this book! It is very interesting to discuss and think about.
Reading this book has expanded my view of the great matriarchs in the Old Testament. I am now looking at my own journey through mortality with new eyes. I recommend this book to women who may doubt their worth in this troubled world.
